Seventy-one New Orleans-area employers were honored Thursday after coming out on top in the annual competition to identify the region’s best workplaces.
The 2022 Top Workplaces program, sponsored by The Times-Picayune, is based on an anonymous survey of employees who nominated their employers for Top Workplaces awards. Most of the survey was completed between October 2021 and February 2022.
Woodhouse Day Spa, which has locations in New Orleans and Metairie, was the overall winner for the Small Business division. That division is for companies with 124 or fewer employees.
In the Medium division, which includes companies with between 125 and 399 employees, Latter & Blum Property Management Inc. was the biggest winner. The company manages more than 900 multi-family, single-family and commercial properties in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi.
Harahan-based Laitram LLC, a world leader in the manufacture of conveyor belts and holder of more than 1,300 active patents, was the biggest winner in the Large Business division.
Representatives from the three companies were joined by several dozen other employers in the region who were also recognized during a ceremony at The Times-Picayune’s St. Charles Avenue office in downtown New Orleans.
Several special awards were presented to employers based on outstanding scores for employee responses to specific statements in the survey. A full summary of the special prizes and other aspects of the competition will be featured in a special section of the Sunday newspaper.
The contest was held in partnership with Philadelphia employee engagement firm Energage. The annual competition, now in its eighth year, seeks to highlight outstanding employment providers in the region and identify ways that organizations can become places where people want to work. It also increases workplace pride and morale among workers.
Winners are chosen based on an anonymous employee survey system that establishes rankings of the best employers in the seven-parish area. By 2022, 70 companies and agencies were ranked as the best places to work.
Emily Engberg, publicity director for The Times-Picayune, gave a keynote address at the ceremony, noting that the continued growth of local businesses is a cause in which the newspaper and its affiliate website NOLA.com are investing.
“We all know that the last few years have been far from conventional and challenging for many,” Engberg said. “But according to his employees, those challenges haven’t stopped them from demonstrating their dedication to their teams and their mission. Companies like his continue to set the bar for excellence year after year and New Orleans would not be the city it is today without his commitment to fostering environments where employees feel valued and motivated.”
Rich Gallagher, chief product officer for Energage, said the company surveyed more than 25,000 employees to establish this year’s best workplaces. He encouraged the winning companies to keep the focus on building and maintaining a people-first culture within their companies.
Gallagher also said winners should use the Top Workplaces award to build trust with job seekers.
“The simple answer to why you’re here is because your employees told us you deserve it,” Gallagher said. “Being one of the best workplaces means you’ve created a culture where employees feel engaged, appreciated and fulfilled. It’s hard work, but you’ve done it.”
